Final Task: Genre Research - Horror Genre

Genre Research - Horror Genre

Common Camera Angles, Movement, and Shots (CAMS):

  • Low Angle Shots: These shots can make characters seem vulnerable or emphasize the power of something menacing.
  • Point-of-View Shots (POV): Placing the camera in the perspective of the antagonist or a lurking threat creates tension and suspense.
  • Dutch Angle Shots: Tilting the camera to create a sense of disorientation or unease.
  • Tracking Shots: Slow, deliberate movements can build suspense or create a sense of impending danger.
  • Extreme Close-Ups: Focusing intensely on certain details can heighten tension or reveal something unsettling.

Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS):

  • Dark and Shadowy Settings: Utilizing lighting to create an eerie atmosphere.
  • Gothic or Abandoned Locations: Haunted houses, desolate areas, or isolated places often feature in horror films.
  • Symbolic Objects or Elements: Religious symbols, creepy dolls, or other objects can add to the atmosphere of fear.
  • Costumes and Makeup: Special effects makeup and costumes are used to create horrifying characters or creatures.

Common Editing:

  • Jump Cuts: Quick cuts between scenes or shots can create a jarring, unsettling effect.
  • Montages: Flashing disturbing images or sequences rapidly to induce fear or shock.
  • Slow-Paced Editing: Lengthening scenes or shots to build tension or anticipation.

Common Sound:

  • Ambient Sounds: Creaking doors, footsteps, or distant whispers enhance suspense.
  • Eerie Music and Soundtracks: Complementing the visuals, music can set the mood and evoke fear.
  • Sound Effects: Sudden, sharp sounds (like a scream or a sudden bang) can startle viewers.

Example Films:

  • "The Shining" directed by Stanley Kubrick
  • "Psycho" directed by Alfred Hitchcock
  • "The Exorcist" directed by William Friedkin
  • "Get Out" directed by Jordan Peele
  • "Hereditary" directed by Ari Aster

Elements Liked:

  • Tension Building: I enjoy how horror films build suspense gradually, keeping viewers on edge.
  • Creative Storytelling: When horror films incorporate unique and unexpected narratives, it's intriguing.

Elements Not Appealing:

  • Excessive Gore: While some gore can be effective, excessive use can overshadow the story and become gratuitous.
  • Predictable Jump Scares: When they're overused or predictable, jump scares can feel cheap and less impactful.
