Genre Research: Little Women

Elements (Conventions) of the Drama Genre in "Little Women":
  • Excellent Character Development: The film does a fantastic job at presenting multifaceted people that have depth and develop throughout time. A defining feature of the genre is how each sister in the March family has a unique personality and storyline.
  • Historical Setting and clothing: The film's depiction of the Civil War era, complete with period-appropriate settings, clothing, and social mores, perfectly depicts the historical context.
  • Emphasis on connections and Social Norms: A recurring subject is the importance of connections, especially those inside the family, and the expectations society has of women. It examines the limitations and difficulties that women in that time period endured, which is a major theme in many historical dramas.

Elements (Conventions) of the Drama Genre in "Little Women" that I Liked:

  • Emotional Depth: The film explores the characters' emotional life in great detail, highlighting their connections, hardships, and goals. This emotional depth is a major selling point for the genre and strikes a deep chord with the audience.
  • Authenticity of the Setting: The plot is made more rich and credible by the genuine depiction of the socioeconomic conventions of the time and the attention to historical detail, which makes for an engaging viewing experience.

Elements (Conventions) of the Drama Genre in "Little Women" that Did Not Appeal to Me:

  • Pacing: If you're used to faster-paced storylines, you might find the movie's pacing slow for certain viewers. Those looking for more action or plot-driven stories may find the emphasis on character development and emotional arcs to be tedious.
  • Predictability: Because this is a well-known tale that has been adapted many times, some viewers who have seen the original work or comparable historical dramas may find the plot to be too obvious. For some listeners, this predictability may take away from the element of surprise or suspense.
